WebP to PNG Converter

File ToolsWebP to PNG with transparency kept, for editors and tools that will not take WebP.

Your files never leave this device. Everything here runs in your browser — your files are never uploaded, stored or seen by us. Open your network tab and check.

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality setting — it stores every pixel exactly as it is now, including any damage an earlier lossy encode already did.

Add images. The format is read from the file itself, so a wrong extension will not fool it.

How this is calculated

WebP → pixels → PNG

  Transparency kept, pixel for pixel
Quality frozen as it is — PNG is lossless from here on
File size much larger, because PNG discards nothing

Choose PNG when transparency or further editing matters.
Choose JPG when a photograph only needs to open somewhere.

Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs in this browser tab.

How it works

Logos, icons, product cut-outs and stickers on the web are increasingly served as WebP with a transparent background. Save one and try to place it in a slide deck, a design tool or a document editor that does not read WebP, and you need another format — one that keeps the transparency. PNG is the one practically everything reads.

The transparency survives exactly. In the worked example, 79% of the illustration's pixels were transparent in the WebP, and the same 79% are transparent in the PNG. Nothing is painted over and no background colour is involved, which is the difference between this and converting to JPG.

The file gets much larger, and for a photograph dramatically so. WebP reached its small size by discarding detail; PNG stores every remaining pixel exactly, including the faint artefacts that compression left behind. An 89.9 KB WebP photograph became a 2.35 MB PNG. The picture is no better for it — it is only stored differently.

What PNG gives you is a stable master copy. Being lossless, it can be edited and re-saved as often as you like without degrading further, which a WebP or a JPG cannot. If a photograph only needs to open in an app that refuses WebP, a JPG is a far smaller answer.

Worked example

Two real WebP images, converted with this page in Chrome 151 on 13 September 2026

  1. An illustration, 1536 × 1536
  2. WebP 405.5 KB 79% of pixels transparent
  3. → PNG 2.33 MB +490% still 79% transparent
  4. A photograph, 3840 × 2160
  5. WebP 89.9 KB
  6. → PNG 2.35 MB 27 times larger, no better to look at
  7. The same photograph as a JPG at 82% was 196.2 KB.

PNG to keep transparency or to keep editing; JPG if a photo just has to open

How to use it

  1. Drop your .webp files in, up to 30 at a time. Each is identified from its own bytes, so a renamed file is caught.
  2. PNG is already selected. There is no quality setting, because PNG is lossless.
  3. Convert and check each file's new size — expect it to grow, especially for photographs.
  4. Download the PNGs. Transparent areas stay transparent, with nothing painted behind them.

What this tool does not do

  • Files get much larger — several times for graphics, and more than twenty times for the photograph in the worked example.
  • It cannot restore detail the WebP discarded. The PNG preserves the picture exactly as the WebP decodes, artefacts included.
  • An animated WebP becomes a single still frame. This converter writes still images only.
  • Metadata is dropped. Re-encoding through a canvas removes EXIF data.
  • One download per file rather than a zip.
  • It runs in your browser, so a large batch is limited by your device's memory: every image is decoded to full size before it is written out.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes, exactly. PNG supports full transparency, so every see-through and partly see-through pixel is carried across as it was. In the worked example the illustration was 79% transparent before and after. Nothing is filled in.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

WebP is a lossy format that throws detail away to stay small; PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly. The illustration in the worked example went from 405.5 KB to 2.33 MB, and a photograph from 89.9 KB to 2.35 MB. The extra size buys lossless storage, not extra quality.

Will converting to PNG improve the quality?

No. The WebP already set the quality when it was compressed, and the PNG records that picture exactly. What PNG adds is that nothing further is lost when you edit it and save it again.

Should I convert WebP to PNG or to JPG?

PNG if the image has transparency you need to keep, or if you are going to edit it. JPG if it is a photograph that simply has to open in something that will not read WebP: the same photograph was 196.2 KB as a JPG and 2.35 MB as a PNG.

Why won't some programs open WebP files?

WebP is younger than JPG and PNG, and support arrived in desktop software and older systems well after browsers had it. Renaming the file does not help, because the contents are still WebP — it has to be converted.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, and no network request carries your images. You can check: open your browser's network tab before converting and watch that none of them does — the only requests you will see after the page loads are small ones recording that the tool was used.

Is this different from the image converter?

It is the same converter, opened with PNG selected, and the advice on this page is about WebP to PNG specifically. You can still choose JPG or WebP as the output.
